When we first start a new forum, it is easy to hit common pitfalls that we should instead be trying to avoid when it comes to monetization unless we know what to avoid and how to avoid them. This can lead to failures or even issues further down the line.

What would you say are the common pitfalls we should avoid when we first start to monetize a website?

Firstly, insufficient resources; make sure to have lots of budgets for your website.
Avoid overloading the website with too many ads.
Don't ignore audience needs and preferences because it will help to monitor analytics.
Lack of engaging and relevant content is another common pitfalls to avoid.

You've made a valid point about not overloading the website with too many ads that are intrusive because there is no one who makes use of any website that enjoys it when ads keeps interrupting whatever they are trying to do on that particular website.

Never make mistake of telling your members to purposely click on ads on your forum in order for you to make money from them. Your account is definitely going to be suspended by Google for trying to manipulate the system.

I was a witness to this when it happened to a forum which I used to post on sometime last year. The forum's name is Discussion Bucks. The owner had to send out mass email and DM to all of the members to stop clicking on ads.

Not engaging in proper forum marketing and advertisement before trying to make money from it. If your forum does not have enough members and visitors, monetizing it will hardly work.

The most popular and idea way to monetize a website is by placing ads on them. But people make the mistake of plastering the ads everywhere on the site making it annoying.. Do not overdo the ads so that you will not chase visitors away.

It is a gradual process, don’t rush it. People want to start making thousands immediately they monetize their sites. It does not work that way, be patient and consistent.
